The E myth revisited | Michael E. Gerber | Business | The first book that changed my mindset on entrepreneurship. In a gist, a good business manager is not necessarily a good entrepreneur. A good entrepreneur or a good business replicates business systems and set the systems run by themselves. This is a type of leverage. | 8.5 |
The definite business plan | Richard Stutely | Business | A practical guide for writing a good business plan. Good reference for start-up entrepreneurs. | 8 |
E myth mastery | Michael E. Gerber | Business | Book 3 of the E myth series. To be reviewed. | 0 |
The Lexus and the olive tree | Thomas Friedman | Economics | One of the best books about globalisation. Deserve a much more detailed review. [Detailed review to be released soon.] | 8 |
The secrets of economic indicators | Bernard Baumohl | Economics | A good reference on economic indicators. Explain not only the science of economic indicators but also the arts and psychological aspects. | 7.5 |
If it’s raining in Brazil, buy Starbucks | Peter Navarro | Economics | Macroeconomics written in layman’s terms. A bit dry on the first few chapters, better in the second half of the book. Good for beginners. Intermediate investors would whunger for more. | 7.5 |
How to read a financial report | John A. Tracy | Finance | Excellent book on explaining accounting concepts to people with minimal accounting background. | 8.5 |
The Financial Times guide to using the financial pages | Romesh Vaitilingam | Finance | A bit dry. UK context. Facts only. Interpretation and explanations not deep enough. | 7 |
Finance for nonfinancial managers | Robert A. Cooke | Finance | Too long-winded. Lack of punch lines. Lack of depth. Does not live up to the title. | 4.5 |
The intelligent investor | Benjamin Graham and Jason Zweig | Investment | Classic. I must confess that I enjoy more on Jason Zweig’s commentaries as they are in present day’s context. [Detailed review to be released soon.] | 9.5 |
Common stocks and uncommon profits | Philip A. Fisher | Investment | Considered as classic by most of the readers. Personally I find Fisher’s writing style not enticing and the topics are hard to follow. He tends to explain 1 concept with 50 lines. Nonetheless, a good read but you need to stay focus. Not good for bedtime reading. | 7.5 |
School of warrant | Wilson Lee and Edmond Lee | Local | Basic stuff on warrants. Written by local authors. | 6 |
Handbook for stock investors | Goh Kheng Chuan | Local | Very very basic stuff on stock. Good for beginners with no prior experience. | 5.5 |
Blue Ocean Strategy | W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne | Marketing | To be reviewed. | 0 |
The seven habits of the highly effective people | Stephen R. Covey | Mindset | Classic. This is one of the rare books that give people paradigm shift. [Detailed review to be released soon.] | 9.5 |
The winning investment habits of Warren Buffet & George Soros | Mark Tier | Mindset | A good compilation on concepts and approaches the 2 most successful investors adopt. Not enough depth. | 8 |
Play to win | Larry Wilson and Hersch Wilson | Mindset | To be reviewed. | 7.5 |
The Warren Buffet way | Robert G. Hagstrom | Mindset | To be reviewed. | 7.5 |
Secrets of millionaire investors | Adam Khoo and Conrad Alvin Lim | Mindset | Local author. Good effort in compiling all the good stuff from the classic books on investing. Well written in layman’s terms. | 6.5 |
The cashflow quadrant | Robert T. Kiyosaki | Mindset | In my opinion, this is the only fairly decent book written by Robert K. It is important to keep reminding ourselves on moving from left to right quadrant in order to achieve financial freedom. | 6 |
What self-made millionaires really think, know & do | Richard Dobbins and Barrie O. Pettman | Mindset | Forgettable. Concepts presented are mainly common sense. | 5 |
Rich dad’s guide to investing | Robert T. Kiyosaki | Mindset | Forgettable. Perhaps due to my personal bias against Robert K. | 5 |
Rich dad, poor dad | Robert T. Kiyosaki | Mindset | Rubbish. Badly written. I hate to see Robert K making millions of dollars selling this book. And I must confess that I hate to hear my good friend RT keeps quoting “Rich Dad this”, “Rich Dad that”, as if this “Rich Dad” is more respectable than his own dad (kidding, no offence). But I must admit his books have great influence on millions of people world wide. Book-wise, this is trash, keep repeating the same old rubbish again and again. I give credits to his 2nd book The Cashflow quadrant though. | 4 |
Master your mind, design your destiny | Adam Khoo and Stuart Tan | Mindset | To be reviewed. | 0 |
How to make money in stocks | William J. O’Neil | Stocks | “Can Slim” methodology seems to work well only in bull market and in the US. Anyway, need to deep dive by testing it before I can give further comments. | 7 |
The successful investor | William J. O’Neil | Stocks | Too superficial. Just jump straight into his 2nd book – “How to make money in stocks”. | 6.5 |
