Assignment of the month

Assignment – June 2008: Macroeconomics and investing

Macroeconomics is important to both ‘technicians’ and ‘fundamentalists’. Technicians need to watch out for dates when important economic figures are released and anticipate the possible outcomes of such releases and act accordingly. Fundamentalists need to understand how overall macroeconomic climates impact the fundamentals of the companies that they are interested in.

This month’s assignment is basically a paper on the relationship between macroeconomics and investment. There is, again, no constraints to the format, depth of contents, or the length of the paper. However, you are strongly advised to write with a ‘practical’ mood rather than an ‘academic’ one, in other words, what the paper covers will be ‘usable’ in the future when you make investment decisions.

Report Submission for Assignment – May 2008: Company Analysis – Hyflux:

Report #1

Assignment – May 2008: Company Analysis – Hyflux

I have been chatting with my good friend RT about practising what we have learnt from books in the past few months on company analysis – from reading and interpreting financial statements, analysing the fundamentals of the business, to stock price trend and many more other related topics.

Talk is cheap.

To show that I am committed to really doing something and taking some action, I am putting my reputation on the line (yes, it’s that serious! 🙂 ) and I am telling the whole world in my blog that I am going to write a company review report on Hyflux – a company which I was so interested since its IPO, but due to lack of skillset, confidence and discipline, I did not take any actions into studying it and buying its shares since ages ago.

Dear readers, here, I am inviting you to join me in doing this little assignment: for the next 3 weeks, eat Hyflux, drink Hyflux (not literally the water though), breathe Hyflux. Research and study this company, understand its background and history, analyse its fundamentals and write a company review report and present and explain your view with facts and arguments on its present state and its possible future development. Please bear in mind that you have to use facts to support your findings and conclusions. No groundless flaming on the company or its personnel please – this is the only house rule set here, the rest, in terms of format and length, etc., is flexible.

We will spend first 3 weeks of each month to do an assignment like this one and use the last week of each month to discuss and debate on each other’s report.
